Biker Sisters + Small Updates

3D Print, Full Rulebooks, Thingiverse

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got some new patreon models, a free thingiverse model, as well as a couple of smaller updates for the game and our website/patreon descriptions.

Biker Sisters Released

This week we’ve released a new set of 3D print models, and we’re super happy with how they turned out, looking like they’re ready to take on anything! :D

Biker Sisters are able to zoom across the battlefield in the blink of an eye, allowing them to get to where they are most needed quickly.

Download the models here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34548348

Note that you must be a Tier 3 patron to access to the link above.

These models are going to be available exclusively on Patreon until the 30th of July, after which they will go up for sale on our CGTrader store at a higher price.

Free Battle Brothers Model

We continue with our quest to provide you all with free models for you to run some test prints, and this week we’ve uploaded a Battle Brothers model on Thingiverse.

Get the model here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4511189

If you’d like to help us out, please follow us and give the model a like, thanks!

Small Game Update

Today we’ve just made a small update to the Ratmen army for the Age of Fantasy series of games, clarifying how the Tunnel Drill team works in order to avoid any doubts. The army books have already been updated, so just head over to the relevant game section to download the latest version.

Grimdark Future on WargameVault

Since we’ve re-vamped our Full Rulebooks we’ve always had some people asking us if they could get access to them outside of Patreon. In order to give people that don’t have access to Patreon in their country a way to get the Full Rulebooks, we’ve decided to try uploading them on WargameVault.

This week we started with Grimdark Future, but we’ll be adding one Full Rulebook every week until they’re all available on WargameVault. Supporting us on Patreon is still the cheapest way to get your hands on all of the content we release, but at least now everyone has a way to get our rulebooks. :)

Get the rulebook by clicking HERE.

Small Website / Patreon Changes

Even after being for 3 years on Patreon there are still some players who are confused by how our release model works, so in order to try and make things clearer we’ve re-worked our games sections and our Patreon home.

For those of you that are still new, here is how it works:

“Every month we work on new games and miniatures, which are first released on Patreon and then later sold in our stores. By supporting us on Patreon you get access to our content before anybody else, and for a much lower price then it will be sold at later.”

We’ve also used this chance to try and clean up the games section and make them a little cleaner, so now all of the extra content (mission cards, campaign rules, etc.) has now been placed in a single shared folder, making it easier to access everything at once instead of having to open individual links.

So yeah, not huge changes, but hopefully they will make things easier to grasp for newcomers and veterans alike. :)

That’s it for today, we’ll be back with an update next week with some previews of new stuff to come, hope you enjoy your weekend and stay safe. :D

Happy Wargaming!

Faster than Light, New Models, Small Updates

2D Print, 3D Print, Competitive Rules, FTL, Game Update, ThatEvilOne, Thingiverse

Hi everyone,

Today we’re very excited to announce a new game, show off some of the models we released this week, share a couple of small game updates and give you a preview of what’s to come next month!

Faster than Light

The time has finally come to reveal our next game: Faster than Light (FTL)

FTL is a spaceship battles game inspired by the likes of Battlefleet Gothic, Star Wars Armada, Dropfleet Commander and our very own WarFleets. This will be a full game, so not just a one-off, with its own rulebook, armies, advanced rules, expansions, etc.

This will be a miniature agnostic game as usual, so you can use models new and old from any game like Battlefleet Gothic, Star Wars Aramada, Dropfleet Commander, Firestorm Armada, etc.

The game is available in early access right now, and will remain in early access until we feel that it’s ready for public release, with solid core rules and multiple factions to pick from. If you’d like to check out the game, help out playtesting it, and generally take part in the development, then join our Patreon.

We’re really excited to be working on a new game and can’t wait to reveal more details as we go. :D

Ratmen Champion Released

This week we’ve released the last model in our Ratmen collaboration with ThatEvilOne, and are very happy about how everything turned out. He makes really amazing models, and also has an upcoming Kickstarter for even more Ratmen stuff, which we’ll make sure to notify you about!

Check out the Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/thatevilone

Ratmen Champions are cunning warriors ready to do anything for victory, even stab their allies in the back if that will help them win the battle.

Download the model here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34548348

Note that you must be a Tier 3 patron to access to the link above.

This model is going to be available exclusively on Patreon until the 29th of June, after which it will go up for sale on our CGTrader store at a higher price.

Free Dwarf Berserker Available

If you’d like to help us out please make sure to follow our Thingiverse page and give the model a like!

Mummified Undead Released

Continuing with our model releases for this week (damn, there’s been a lot), we’ve got a new paper army available for you with the Mummified Undead. :D

Mummified Undead are large armies of skeletons and animated constructs lead by mighty wizards. Their loyal priests raise the dead and imbue stone statues with magic to fight.

Starters Set, Models, Teasers and More

3D Print, Kyoushuneko Miniatures, OPR Game Jam, Starter Sets

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got some our first starter set for you, some new 3D models, an update on the 2021 game jam, some reminders for those that are new, as well as teasers for some upcoming releases.

Grimdark Future Starter Set

When it comes to miniature wargaming, it can be quite difficult for players to get into a new game since there’s usually a large cost involved with buying new books, miniatures, terrain, etc.

In order to help new players find our games and get them playing as fast as possible, we’re going to be regularly releasing new starter sets for sale on WargameVault, which serve as an all-in-one package to get people started.

So with that we’re proud to release the first Grimdark Future starter set: Battle for Magellan-2

This starter set contains the core rules, 12 unit stat cards, two complete paper armies with 43 miniatures, 11 flat terrain pieces and a set of 106 play tokens, making for an incredible content rich package.

If you’re interested you can get this starter set for just $4.99 by clicking HERE.

These starter sets don’t have multiple army colors or terrain seasons like you get on Patreon, so the best deal is still to subscribe there, but they should hopefully give more players a new way to find and try out our games. :)

Dwarf Warriors 3D Models

Dwarves are known for their prowess in battle and lack of fear when faced with enemies twice their height, and these Dwarf Warriors are rightly respected by their enemies.

These models were made in collaboration with Kyoushuneko Miniatures, check out the Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/kyoushuneko_miniatures

These models come with 5 different head designs, 5 different body designs and 5 different weapon types (axes, hammers, picks, maces, spears).

Download the models here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34548348

Note that you must be a Tier 3 patron to access to the link above.

These models are going to be available exclusively on Patreon until the 29th of June, after which they will go up for sale on our CGTrader store at a higher price.

OPR Game Jam 2021

In order to spread more awareness about the OPR Game Jam and make sure that people’s games from this year’s jam don’t get lost, we’ve added a new section to our website where people can check them out.

Whilst we were at it we’ve also decided to already create the page for the 2021 jam, this way people can slowly join over the course of a year and hopefully we can get even more participants to create awesome games!

Make sure to sign up here: https://itch.io/jam/oprgj2021

Community Reminders

As the project keeps growing we have more and more new people joining us, which is really awesome, but we also understand that it’s hard to keep up with all the stuff we’ve got going on. If you’re new to the project you should definitely check these things out:

  • Newsletter – Sign up to receive monthly recaps of everything we release.
  • Forum – Find the FAQ, ask questions and find lots of shared content.
  • Facebook Group – A great place to share images and talk about our games.
  • Discord – Chat with the community and organize games online.
  • Teespring – Show your support with an official OPR t-shirt.

Upcoming Releases Teaser

With full rulebooks for all of our main games having been released, some of you have been asking what’s next for OPR in terms of game releases and expansions. So far we’ve been pretty vague about the road ahead, but today we’re ready to reveal just a little more about what is coming up in the near future.

Way back in our January Community Survey (about time we made another one actually…), we asked you what type of expansions you’d be interested in the most, and the top results were narrative campaigns and dynamic mission rules. Whilst we released a set of Dynamic Mission Cards in March, we never actually said anything more about narrative campaigns, so you guessed it, that’s what we’re currently working on.

Since it’s still in development we don’t want to give out too many details yet, but we’re currently working on a narrative campaign for Grimdark Future, which will take you on an epic adventure with lots of cool missions and an exciting story to read. This is the first time we’re trying out a narrative campaign, and we’re very curious to see how it turns out!

Another thing that we asked in the community survey was what settings people would be interested in for our next full game, and the top result was spaceship battles. This result as well as all the great feedback we received when we re-released Orion’s Gate / War Fleets in December has really pushed us towards making spaceship battles our next game.

As before, since this is still all early in development we don’t want to give out too many details, but for now you can expect that a spaceship battles game will be going into early access sometime in the near future, with a full public release hopefully a couple of months down the road. Don’t worry if you’re a fan of our current games though, we will continue fully supporting and updating them too. :)

That’s it for today, we’re really excited to be working on all of these new things, and we’ll be providing you with more details soon. Make sure to sign up to our Newsletter. ;)

Happy Wargaming!

Thingiverse, New Units + Updates

3D Print, Collaboration, Game Update, Ilhadiel, Thingiverse

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got some cool announcements regarding 3D models, a couple of new units for Grimdark Future, as well as some smaller general updates.

Free 3D Models on Thingiverse

After much deliberation we’ve finally settled on Thingiverse as our go-to platform to provide everyone with free samples of our models, and you can find our page here: https://www.thingiverse.com/onepagerules/about

This is something that we’ve been mulling over for a while, because we want to provide free models so that people can do test prints before buying, but don’t want it to hurt our sales.

What we’ve come up with is a simple solution: every couple of weeks we’ll be releasing a single model from one of our unit sets, which should give you a nice preview of what you can get with the full set.

The first model we’re releasing is from the Battle Sisters Troops set, and you can find the free model by following this link: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4441573

If you want to help out please make sure to follow the page and give the model a like, and we’ll be posting more news soon on the next free models you can get! :D

Beastmen Shaman by Ilhadiel

Continuing our collaboration with Ilhadiel, this month he made an awesome looking Beastmen Shaman for us, so make sure to check out the Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/ilhadiel

“Beastmen Shamans are attuned with nature and master spell casting with ease. They use this power to channel wild fury into their allies and to inspire animals to join them in battle.”

Download the model here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34548348

Note that you must be a Tier 3 patron to access to the link above.

This model is going to be available exclusively on Patreon until the 29th of June, after which it will go up for sale on our CGTrader store at a higher price.

New Grimdark Future Units

On the game side of things we’ve got some new units for the Machine Cult as well as the Battle Sisters, just because those armies can’t ever get awesome enough. :D

Machine Cult

  • Added new units: Raider Cavalry, Sky Stalkers, Arch Gunship
  • Heroes have 2 new ranged weapon upgrades

Battle Sisters

  • Added new unit: Fanatic Bikers
  • Fanatic Sisters lost the Fast rule but gained Defense 5+

Small Updates

Finally we’ve got two small updates, one for AoF: Regiments and one for heroes with ambushing special rules in multiple GF: Firefight and AoF:Skirmish armies.

AoF: Regiments

  • Added a note in the Basic/Full Rulebooks on how to determine which facing to charge

GF: Firefight & AoF: Skirmish

  • Updated all army special rules that give half the units Ambush to require them to deploy near each other

That’s it for today, please make sure to check out our Thingiverse page and give us a like, and we’ll make sure to keep bringing you awesome free models. :)

Hi everyone,

In today’s update we have some new models, some old models, and some updates about future models… so yeah, everything is revolving around models today. :D

Battle Sisters Fanatics

The first 3D release of the month are the brutal Battle Sisters Fanatics, who charge into combat with their heavy chainsaw swords. This kit comes with 5 different heads and poses (and massive chainsaw swords).

“Battle Sisters Fanatics leave behind their heavy wargear to stay light on their feet and quickly get in the enemy’s face, cutting them down with their heavy chainsaw swords.”

Note that you must be a Tier 3 patron to access to the link above.

2D Paper Terrain

On the 2D side we’ve got some mixed paper terrain, which you can use for games with plastic models or paper models, making it super fast to get a game going.

The mixed terrain pack comes with 2 fields, 2 groups of scatter terrain, 2 barricades, 2 forests and 3 ruins. There are 4 different seasons available, each with their own flavor and little details to make then special.

This terrain is going to be available exclusively on Patreon until the 29th of June, after which it will go up for sale on our WargameVault Store at a higher price.

New Rulebook Released

3D Print, Age of Fantasy, Collaboration, Full Rulebooks, Game Update, Ilhadiel, Regiments

Hi everyone,

In today’s update we have a new rulebook, some important changes, and a new 3D model collaboration, but let’s not waste too much time and get right into it.

Age of Fantasy: Regiments

Today we’re very excited to release the Full Rulebook for Age of Fantasy: Regiments!

This has been a LONG time coming, but now we finally have Full Rulebooks available for all of our games, as well as Beginner’s Guides to get people started. We’ve also updated some other important stuff as part of this release, so make sure to keep reading to find out what has changed. :)

Before we get into the contents we’d like to present you the new cover art for the game, another gorgeous piece by the mighty Brandon Gillam.

This new rulebook starts out with a thorough explanation of all the core rules of the game, with lots of diagrams and examples to make things as clear as possible.

We’ve found that new players that never played rank & file games before were struggling with some of the basic concepts of the game, and with this section it should be much easier for them to get into the game.

It’s only after that however that you get to the real meat of the rulebook!

The advanced rules section contains a ton of new ways for you to customize your game, such as new deployment zone types, new mission objectives, new actions, and a lot more.

These rules are modular so that you can mix and match however you like, allowing you to create tailor-made slaughter so you and your friends to revel in.

Then there is the total conversions section, which alter the core rules in such a way to provide you with completely new game mechanics, each with their own tactical challenges and strategies.

There are total conversions for things such as fog of war, fatigue and command points, each adding a new layer of the game, allowing you to experience the game like you never have before.

The newest addition to the game are Phased Battles, which change the way that alternating activations work, giving you more structure regimental battles, and allowing you to play massive game with ease.

Here is a full list of all the advanced rules and total conversions:

  • Terrain Placement Rules
  • Multiple Deployment Styles
  • Extra Missions
  • Side-Missions
  • Extra Actions
  • Solid Buildings
  • Random Events
  • Battlefield Conditions
  • Terrain & Objective Effects
  • Fog of War Rules
  • Brutal Damage Rules
  • Command Points Rules
  • Fatigue Rules
  • Rules for Phased Battles
  • Rules for Multiplayer Games
  • Rules for Small-Scales & Multi-Basing

Oh, and did we mention that you can use the small-scales and multi-basing rules to play with your old Warmaster models, or to use your unit trays from Kings of War? :D

I think enough has been said, go get the rulebook by clicking HERE.

Note that when getting the rulebook for the low price of just $3 you’ll also get access to the other Patreon rewards, so that’s an additional 4 rulebooks for our other games, as well as this month’s 2D paper models.

Game Updates

As we mentioned earlier there’s some important updates that are coming along with this release, and whilst none of them are major, they’re all serving as small contributions in improving our games.

Starting off with our Age of Fantasy games, we’ve re-worked the way Command Groups work, and now you can buy individual Sergeants, Musicians and Battle Standards for your units, including in AoF: Skirmish.

Then for AoF: Regiments we’ve made a small update in the core rules, allowing Wavering units to do a single 90° pivot when they’re activated, but otherwise remaining idle. This should give units a small chance to fight back and recover, instead of keeping them stuck in a loop of Wavering results.

Speaking more generally we’ve also gone ahead and updated all of the army lists for GFF and AoFS, consolidating upgrade lists to remove awkward situations with multiple instances of the same upgrade for units.

Finally the biggest change comes to the way spell casting works, and this is both for the Grimdark Future games as well as the Age of Fantasy games. This update comes in two parts: line of sight changes and spell lists changes.

In the newest release of the game casting and blocking spells now requires line of sight. This not only feels more natural on the tabletop, but should also stop spell casters from hiding safely behind a mountain all game whilst wreaking havoc on enemy forces.

Then we’ve also gone back and re-worked all spell lists for all armies, lowering the power of attack spells as well as re-balancing them to make them a little more useful for each individual army. With this newest release you can’t spend the whole match just spamming attack spells, incentivising players to use effect spells more.

With all of these changes we’ve updated pretty much every single army in the game, so whatever files you have are now outdated, and you should make sure to get the latest release. :)

New 3D Print Collaboration with Ilhadiel

This month we’re starting a collaboration with Ilhadiel, who makes awesome 3D print models for fantasy on his Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ilhadiel

He has tons of fantasy models available, but what caught our eyes the most is his line of Foxmen, which are perfect to use as Beastmen in Age of Fantasy. To help him spread the word about his miniatures we’re going to be releasing 3 of his models in the coming months, starting with a Beastmen Champion!

Beastmen Champions are unstoppable forces of destruction on the battlefield, slaughtering their enemies with wild strength. This model comes with a massive broadsword that can chop through even the toughest foes.

Download the model here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34548348

Note that you must be a Tier 3 patron to access to the link above.

This model is going to be available exclusively on Patreon until the 30th of May, after which it will go up for sale on our CGTrader store at a higher price.

That’s it for today! With the release of AoFR we’ve finished releasing full rulebooks for our main line of games for now, so what might be coming next? Who knows…

Happy Wargaming!

Game Jam Results + New Models

2D Print, 3D Print, Game Jam 2020, Quickplay Armies

Hi everyone,

Today we’re going to be highlighting a couple of cool games from the game jam, and we’ve also got some new 3D print and 2D paper models for you. Oh, and a little teaser at the end…

Game Jam Results

This year’s game jam was a great success, with 65 participants creating 23 awesome games, we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out (especially for a first try)!

Now that everyone has had a chance to check out and rate the various games, we wanted to highlight a couple of them that we found particularly interesting. These are not the “best” games or the “winners” of the jam, but simply some of the games that sparked our imagination.

You can check out the top rated games by the community here: https://itch.io/jam/oprgj2020/results

Now then, let’s get on with it!

The Night of the Hunt by Joe Fonseca

The Night of the Hunt is really interesting because it takes the concept of asymmetric design and really runs with it, whilst also remaining enough in familiar territory that it’s really intuitive to play. Since this was the top rated game of the jam we’ll be diving deep into what makes it so awesome. :D

One player takes the role of the monster, a single powerful entity set out to cause mayhem in town, whilst the other player controls a group of hunters that want to rid the world of this evil.

There are lots of cool features in this game, such as the varied objectives available and the high level of customization for both the monster and the hunters, but the most interesting feature is how different the monster plays from the hunters.

This is because whilst the monster is alone, it starts out with a lot of information that the hunters don’t have, making for a tense game of cat and mouse. The monster starts out in a hidden state, with no model on the board, and controls its movement and actions by noting them secretly on a piece of paper. In the meantime the hunters are going around trying to find him before he completes his secret objective.

It’s this disparity of information that leads to some really interesting situations, with the monster hiding in the shadows and then jumping out to devour a hunter before hiding again. Really exciting stuff!

We can imagine it being very interesting to try out the game with multiple players each controlling a hunter, or even adding in a second monster for more mayhem.

Super cool game, definitely give it a try: https://rabid-tucan.itch.io/the-night-of-the-hunt

BgBOzM

Mechanichrome by Aaron Richardson

Mechanichrome also executes beautifully on the concept of asymmetric design, but takes it in a very different direction, with one player taking control of a band of explorers, whilst the other player acts almost as a GM, preparing the ruins with traps and using the guards that protect the data treasure.

What makes this game really interesting is that almost everything is controlled via a deck of cards, from exploring new parts of the ruins to attacking or grabbing treasure, and the interactions between the cards can add really interesting twists to how the game plays out.

Add a high level of customization of explorer stats as well as lots of different guard types and other threats, and you’ve got yourself an exciting game of exploration and high stakes combat.

Grab yourself a deck of cards and check it out: https://ansr-games.itch.io/mechanichrome

TuX_eU

Super Ranger Squadron by StarHunter Blue

Super Ranger Squadron immediately caught our eye thanks to its colorful sentai setting, but actually ended up having us hooked to its suit-based card mechanics. The game has interesting asymmetric design with one player controlling 5 customizable rangers, whilst the other player controls endless waves of bad guys.

The rangers have special powers that are only activated when a specific suit is drawn, and their goal is to remove specific cards from their deck, lowing their overall strength but bringing them closer to their objective. The bad guy on the other hand has a random objective that he has to complete, whilst trying to stall the rangers long enough so that they can’t assemble all aces and joker.

This game is really interesting because everything is controlled via a deck of cards, and it also has lots of fun mechanics on top of that, such as the bad guys picking up rangers and running off with them. :D

Assemble your rangers and give it a try: https://starhunterblue.itch.io/super-ranger-squadron

0_xWgQ

Vostok by Erik C. Battle

Finally we’ve got to mention Vostok, which even though didn’t really follow the asymmetric design theme was far to interesting for us to pass by in this highlight section.

Vostok is a solo survival game set in a post-apocalyptic frozen wasteland. Players start off by creating a custom tribe and then set out to explore the wasteland during the day, and then do upkeep at night.

The game uses a really interesting 2D6 system for all of its actions, with the wasteland “reacting” based on the rolls, which makes for very tense exploration where every roll could bring out new dangers. Then during the night your tribe members advance their abilities, and they can even conceive children which grow up and can go out on missions as well once they’ve become adults.

This game is filled with interesting ideas, and we highly encourage the creator to keep working on it, because this could become something epic (feel free to drop us an e-mail if you need any advice).

23 New Games + New 3D Models

3D Print, Age of Fantasy, Game Jam 2020, Game Update, Grimdark Future, Kyoushuneko Miniatures, Quickplay Armies

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got a TON of new one-page games for you to try, some awesome new 3D print models, an update for the Deep-Sea Elves and some new Quickplay Armies.

Play & Rate 23 New Games

Last weekend we ran the very first OPR Game Jam, which was a ton of fun and resulted in the creation of 23 awesome new games!

The theme for the jam was “Asymmetric Design”, which sparked a lot of cool and unexpected ideas, making for some truly unique games, so make sure to take a look at all of them (which should be pretty quick as they’re all one-page games).

jam games

Now that the jam is over we need everyone to check out the games and rate them, which is completely anonymous and open to the public, so even if you didn’t take part in the game jam you can still give your opinion.

The criteria for ratings are “Design”, “Originality” and “Adherence to the Theme”, and whilst there is no winner or prize, we’ll make sure to highlight some of the most interesting games in next week’s news post.

Check out the games here: https://itch.io/jam/oprgj2020/entries

We’d like to thank everyone that participated in the jam, and we’re looking forward to hosting a new one next year to see what crazy new games you come up with. :D

Note: If you want to help out games that didn’t get a lot of ratings yet you can filter by “least rated” or click on “submissions in need of ratings”.

Deep-Sea Elves Update

Thanks to a suggestion from our always helpful community we have updated the Deep-Sea Elves army with a lot of new units, bolstering their battle lines. Until now their army list was quite small, but with today’s update you can now field 10 new units!

These units were inspired by the Trident Realms of Neritica by Mantic Games, which feature a lot of awesome water and sea themed models. So if you’re coming over from Kings of War or are looking to grab a couple of new models, then this update is for you.

Wolf Brothers vs Orc Marauders – Quickplay Armies

Quickplay Armies are pre-made army lists designed to be ready to play out of the box, without the need to count point costs or create your own lists. They are the perfect thing to dip your toes into new armies and see if you like them!

There’s a big box of new models out there and we couldn’t help but come up with some lists for it to get you started. These lists feature some sneaky Wolf Brothers taking on a beefy list of Orc Marauders, making for some rather interesting gameplay.

This week’s Quickplay Armies: Wolf Brothers vs Orc Marauders

Prime Brothers of the Wolf Detachment

  • 1x Captain w/ Counter, Camo Cloak, Pistol & Energy Sword
  • 5x Infiltration Squad w/ Counter
  • 5x Infiltration Squad w/ Counter

Orc Marauders

  • 1x Warlord w/ Ultra Armor, Twin Carbine & Ultra Claw
  • 5x Boss Mob w/ 1x Carbine + Heavy Flamethrower Attachment
  • 3x Ultra Bosses w/ 1x Dual Ultra Sawblades, 1x Twin Carbine & 1x Carbine + Heavy Flamethrower Attachment

The Wolf Brothers in this set are all about using Scout to control key regions and secure objectives early in the match. The list comes with a Captain with Camo Cloak that can hold his own, whilst the Infiltrators can use their Rending Carbines to take out heavily armored troops with ease. Don’t forget that everyone has Counter, so you can go toe-to-toe with the Orcs in melee.

The Orc Marauders on the other side focus on raw melee power combined with a hefty dose of Heavy Flamethrowers. The Warlord is a massive beast that can effortlessly take on entire squads, whilst the Utra Bosses can withstand sustained fire whilst they slowly move across the battlefield. Make sure to use your Boss Mob to strategically soak up some fire, and don’t be afraid to charge head-first into the enemy.

Grimdark-Orcs

That’s it for today, make sure to rate all of those awesome game jam games, and we’ll be back next week with the results. :)

Happy Wargaming!

OPR Game Jam 2020 is Live!

Game Jam 2020

oprgj2020

Hi everyone,

The first ever OPR Game Jam is now live, and the the theme will be:

ASYMMETRIC DESIGN

What does that mean you ask?

Asymmetric Design is a principle of game design where each player is given a different set of options and mechanics to play with, so that players don’t stand on even ground.

This could mean giving players different starting parameters, different levels of information, different abilities, different goals, or  just generally different rules.

Examples of games with Asymmetric Design (in no particular order): Evolve, Starcraft, Root, Vast, Descent, Netrunner, Mysterium, Star Wars Risk, etc.

If you want to see video examples of games with Asymmetric Design, check out these videos about Root and Vast (games where each player controls a faction with very different mechanics), as well as this video about How Games Get Balanced (which contains lots of examples of asymmetric games).

So, did those videos get you pumped up to design an awesome game?

Then head over to our Discord server to share your ideas: https://discord.gg/djBydgk

You now have 48hrs to design your game, and send in your submission by:

  • UK – 8PM BST Sunday May 10th
  • USA East Coast – 3PM ET Sunday May 10th
  • USA West Coast – Noon PT Sunday May 10th
  • Europe – 9PM CET Sunday May 10th
  • Japan – 4AM JST Monday May 11th
  • Australia – 5AM AEST Monday May 11th

Check out the Game Jam page for more info on submissions: https://itch.io/jam/oprgj2020

Submission Rules:

  1. The game has to follow the theme.
  2. The game must fit on a single sheet, using the provided template:
    • The front page must contain all of the game’s core rules.
    • The back page may optionally contain rules on unit creation or special rules.
  3. Every game must be submitted along with the following:
    • A visual moodboard for the game. We recommend using BeFunky (it’s free).
    • (Optional) Pictures of you playing the game, the miniatures, the table, etc.

Please make sure to submit your game in .pdf format so that it’s easy for everyone to read it on mobile and desktop!

We have created an example game (not following the theme) for you to see what a correct submission should look like, and if you need more inspiration you can check out our one-off games to see how you can fit a full experience on just one page.

Finally we wanted to remind everyone that the most important thing is to create a game that has interesting mechanics and an engaging core gameplay loop, and not a perfectly balanced grand strategy game.

You could focus on creating a small one-off encounter for example (like a rowdy bar fight, or an exciting airplane dogfight), or maybe make a game that follows a short linear story. Either way, just try to make something fun to play, regardless of its size. :)

Happy Designing!
