We’d like to remind everyone that tonight we’ll be running the 6th edition of the OPR Writing Jam! :)

The OPR Writing Jams are story writing marathons, where participants are asked to write a one-page story set in the OPR universe in 48hrs, following a common theme. Participation is completely free and at the end of the writing jam we highlight our favourite stories.

The writing jam is planned to run from December 9th to December 11th, with the theme being announced at the start of the jam. Sign up now: https://itch.io/jam/oprwj6

Community Survey Results

This past week we ran our bi-annual community survey, and finally the results are in. Once again the survey has grown by a lot, with 1000+ responses, and 450+ comments for us to read!

There’s lots of stuff to go through, so we’ll try to keep this as brief as possible.

Which of these game ideas are you most interested in?

Here the results are very similar to our past survey, with coop skirmish, small-scale combat, and mech warfare games ranking highest. It’s great to know that all 3 of those are already in the works. :)

Which of the OPR games do you play?

Again very similar results to the last polls. It’s going to be interesting to see if FTL gains in popularity once the new Grimdark Future version of it comes out, or if it will remain towards the bottom of the list.

How would you like to learn about OPR lore?

Following the same trend as above, here we also have similar results to the last poll. We’re currently working on the top 2 voted things, so it’s cool to see that they’re still popular among fans.

Do you play using OPR miniatures?

It seems that the amount of responders that use OPR minis has gone up by 10% over the last survey, showing a positive trend for our models. At this point only 25% of our audience doesn’t use OPR models, and we imagine that number will keep shrinking as more armies get official OPR minis.

Which Grimdark Future armies do you play?

As in our last survey, we’ve noticed that every time we release OPR minis for specific factions, their numbers start to go up. Here we can see that the Wormhole Daemons now have 10% more players than they used to.

Which Age of Fantasy armies do you play?

Same thing as above, but now for fantasy, where the Ratmen have by almost 15%, and the Rift Daemons have gone up by 10%.

Which Warfleets: FTL factions do you play?

With Grimdark Future FTL in the works, this feels almost like a bit of a throwaway question, but still interesting to see the results. Empire remains at the top, but interestingly enough Progenitors used to be in 2nd place, and now Xenos are in 2nd place.

Which of these community tools are you interested in?

The community wiki continues being our top tool that players are interested in, which gives us confidence that our recent investments into improving the wiki and changing the hosting were well spent. Maybe this question can be dropped for the next survey.

Which OPR merch would you be interested in?

In our last poll we accidentally chose “pick one” for this question, but this time we switched to “pick any”, and it gave us some interesting results. It’s cool to see that ~60% of you are possibly interested in merch, because we’re going to be launching a new merch store very soon. :)

Do you have any suggestions for things we should do with OPR (new games, armies, features, etc.)?

Alright, here we go, this is the big one. With 450+ messages we can’t cover everything here, so we’ll try to highlight the most important takeaways from this survey.

WebApp Point Calc – Many of you have been asking for the Point Calculator to be implemented in the WebApp. This is already in the works, but it’s simply taking more time to develop than we thought. Hang in there, once it’s out, it’ll be amazing!

Quick-Start Army Lists – There are many that asked for some starter lists for each army, which is something we actually recently implemented in Army-Forge as the list generator. You can go to Army-Forge right now and use it already.

Army List Sharing – Some of you asked for a feature to share army lists online, sort of like deck sharing for MtG. This is something that we’re looking into, but no promises yet, since we have other priorities.

Expanded Lore – A ton of people asked about expanding the lore, sharing more information about the worlds, showcasing maps, and more, which is all in the works already. It’s going to take a little longer, but we’re hoping to start pushing everything out by mid-2023.

Narrative Campaigns – Tied with the lore requests, we’ve also had lots of people asking for more narrative campaigns, with named characters, and bundled with printable armies as well. This is definitely something we want to release ASAP, but its going to take some time as well. We first need the lore to be fully revealed, before narrative campaigns make sense.

Small-Scale & Solo/Coop Games – Many many many of you asked for small-scale and solo/coop games, which are both in the works. We’re hoping to have both game types released in 2023, as well as releasing small-scale minis and heroid/rpg minis too.

Grimdark FTL – There were many of you who asked us to bring FTL to the Grimdark Future universe, which is already in the works. The beta is currently available on Patreon, and once we’re out of beta we’re hoping to have FTL lists in the WebApp as well. We’re also in the early stages of developing concepts for new ship miniatures for them, which is very exciting.

New Advanced Rules – We had lots of suggestions for new advanced rules for the Full Rulebooks, to help you further expand and customize your play experience. This is something we’ve also already been working on, and we are planning on greatly expanding the advanced rules content in the future.

Fantasy Gang Wars – This is a very popular request, to make a fantasy version of Gang Wars. It’s something that we would love to work on, but right now we have other priorities. Don’t worry though, eventually it will happen!

Map-Based Expansion – Another expansion that we’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and that people have asked for, is to have a map-based supplement, that allows you to tie your matches in to large territory control campaigns. Again something we’d love to do, but we have other priorities right now.

Historicals / Other IPs – Some of you asked us to make historical games, or to start making games for other IPs. We are honestly not very interested in doing that right now, because that’s not our focus, and because all of this will be “solved” once the WebApp point calc integration is completed. Once that tool is in your hands, you will be able to make and share army lists for whatever you want, and won’t have to wait for us to finally make rules to cover the indo-china wars.

New Starter Sets – Plenty of people have been asking for new starter sets, for 3D print, 2D print, and physical minis. This is something that we’re definitely interested in doing, and might be able to release in early 2023.

Compatibility Program – As you may have already seen with Tablehammer and Dragon Trapper’s Lodge, we’ve been working on a compatibility program, to help other creators make army lists for OPR games. This is something many of you have been requesting, and we’ll keep expanding this program so that one day, everyone can play together under the OPR roof. :)

FLGS Support / Volunteering – There are many of you that have asked for more FLGS support, as well as for a volunteering program. This is something that we’re slowly working on, and we want to help you create your own local communities for OPR, with lots of tools and resources to get you going. Stay tuned for more information in the coming year.

Community Wiki Updates – This was not a huge request, but we saw multiple comments asking for parts of the community wiki to be updated, so we thought we’d comment on this. The OPR wiki is a community wiki, which means that it’s filled out by content made from fans, just like you. So if you want to change anything on the wiki, you can simply log in and make those changes. We’ve also got a channel on discord where fans get together to organize wiki changes, so make sure to check it out.

Thank You’s – Last but not least, there was an overwhelming number of you who used the comment box to simply say thank you. We really appreciate all of the love that you have been sending our way, and look forward to continue to provide you with fun games and worlds for many years to come.

Thank you everyone for answering the community survey, it’s always a pleasure to hear all of your feedback (good or bad). The next community survey will be in June 2023, when hopefully a lot of the stuff discussed here will already be released.

Into the new year we go! :D

Weekly News: Community Survey, Comp Updates, Army Generator and More!

2D Print, Community Survey, Game Update, Web Comics, WebApp, Writing Jam

Hi everyone,

Every 6 months we run a community survey to get a general feel for what sort of players are currently interested in OPR, and to give everyone an opportunity to send in their feedback/suggestions anonymously.

This is a super quick survey that only takes a few minutes to fill in, and we’ll be keeping it open for a week, with the results being revealed to the public in next week’s post.

Take the survey here: https://forms.gle/1cu1ckt1fnw8uyNM7

This is an 8-part video series spread through the YouTube channels of Cinecore Media, Goobertown Hobbies and MiniWargaming, detailing the journey towards filming the most cinematic battle report in the world, and finally showing off the batrep in the end!

Writing Jam Soon

The OPR Writing Jams are story writing marathons, where participants are asked to write a one-page story set in the OPR universe in 48hrs, following a common theme. Participation is completely free and at the end of the writing jam we highlight our favourite stories.

The writing jam is planned to run from December 9th to December 11th, with the theme being announced at the start of the jam. Sign up now: https://itch.io/jam/oprwj6

Competitive Rules Updates

Today we’ve added some new restrictions to the competitive rules, in an effort to further balance list-building in matched play environments. The issues we’re trying to solve here are the concentration of army power into single activations, as well as the spamming of chaff models in skirmish, where hordes are harder to deal with.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • All Games – No single unit may be worth over 33% of the total army points
  • Skirmish Games – Player may take max. 1 model per full 20pts in their list

For reference, this means that in a 2000pts battle game, you can’t have a single unit worth over 660pts, and in skirmish you can’t have a single unit worth over 99pts, and you can take max. 15 models in a 300pts game.

You can find the rules in each game’s supplements folder. :)

Army-Forge List Generator

In order to help new players get into the game more easily, as well as give veterans some fun tools to play around with, we’ve now added an automatic list generator in the Army-Forge.

The way this works is simple: select an army and points value, and Army-Forge will automatically create a list for you at that selected point cost, so that you can get playing straight away.

This is a great tool for new players who don’t know what they’re doing yet, because they don’t have to fiddle around with army lists before getting into the game. For veterans, this can be a fun way to build new lists, using the list generator as a baseline to then modify the list to their liking, or try out new combos they hadn’t thought of.

Give it a shot here: https://army-forge.onepagerules.com/

WGV/DTRPG – Models Removed Soon

At the end of the month we’re going to permanently archive some of our older 2D models on WGV/DTRPG, which don’t reflect our vision of OPR paper models anymore. If you want to buy the models, make sure to get them before the 31st of December!

The models are only going to be archived on WGV/DTRPG, so don’t worry, this means that if you bought the models, they will stay in your WGV/DTRPG library forever. The only thing that’s changing is that the models won’t be available for purchase anymore.

Here are the models that will be archived:

  • All models and terrain sets before Beastmen and Eternal Dynasty
  • All starter sets and other bundles
  • Warfleets: FTL content NOT being removed

Don’t worry though paper minis fans, over time we are going to be adding more and more paper minis and terrain in our new style, as well as provide new starter sets and bundles in the new style. :)

Dwarf Guilds Update + Stream Recording

Community Survey, Game Update, Live Stream, Video Content

Hi everyone

This week we’ve got a grimdark Dwarf Guilds v2.50 update for all of you miners out there, which tries to polish up the list a bit, and modifies a couple of units to fit people’s models.

Whilst overall the army has stayed mostly the same, there are a couple of key changes, such as merging the Elites into the Berserkers, as well as the Support and Weapon Squads, and the removal of the Sniper Team.

Then we’ve also added a new Fortress Tank vehicle, and removed the Battle Train, which was simply not balanced enough for us. Don’t worry though, you can expect some new big bad unit for them at some point in the future, but we can’t guarantee that it will be a train again.

Finally there have been some weapon loadout changes across the board, with the introduction of some interesting new special rules (Beam + Magma), as well as the addition of some new unit upgrades here and there (such as the Spectral Scanner and some Regeneration upgrades).

Check out the new Dwarf Guilds on the OPR WebApp: https://webapp.onepagerules.com/

OPR Hangout Stream – Recording Available

On the last week of every month, we’re running an OPR Hangout stream over on YouTube, where we showcase upcoming releases, sneak peeks at future content, and have a Q&A session for you to get involved.

If you missed out, check it out here:

OPR Hangout Stream – Community Survey

We’ve only just started our new journey with the OPR Hangout Streams, and now want to hear your opinions!

At the moment we’re doing a simple preview of what’s coming in the next few months, and then a little Q&a, but we’re curious to see what sort of content YOU would like to see. We’re also very interested in figuring out what the best day/time for streams should be, so your replies really help us out. :)

Community Survey Results

Community Survey, Physical Minis, Video Content, Web Comics

Hi everyone,

This past week we ran our bi-annual community survey, and finally the results are in. Once again the survey has grown by a lot, with 900+ responses, and 400+ comments for us to read!

There’s lots of stuff to go through, so we’ll try to keep this as brief as possible.

Which of these game ideas are you most interested in?

The results here are very similar to our last survey, with mech combat, small-scale games, and skirmish adventure games taking the lead. Good thing that we’re working on all of these already. :)

Which of the OPR games do you play?

Compared to our last poll, it’s interesting to see that as our audience has grown, the number of FTL players has remained about the same. Later this year we’re going to make some big updates to FTL, which will hopefully open the game up to a bigger audience.

How would you like to learn about OPR lore?

In our last poll there was no option for faction guides, and boy are we glad we added it. Whilst the demand for almost everything has stayed the same, faction guides has now become the most popular choice amongst our fans. Realistically, it’s going to take at least 6-12 months before we can start releasing faction guides on a regular basis, but it’s good to see that there’s interest in them.

Do you play using OPR miniatures?

It’s very interesting to see that ~70% of players actually play using OPR miniatures, as we would have expected that number to be much lower until recently. This gives us confidence that our audience responds well to our minis, and that we can keep making players happy with them.

Which Grimdark Future armies do you play?

The player numbers for the different factions have stayed more or less the same as usual, but now with the addition of the Jackals and Eternal Dynasty, which have a solid number of players. As we release more models for different armies, we expect those to go up in ranking as well.

Which Age of Fantasy armies do you play?

Here we have essentially the same results as above, however it seems that Saurians got even more players than before, remaining our most popular faction of all time (which makes sense, because they’re awesome).

Which Warfleets: FTL factions do you play?

FTL fleet numbers have stayed about the same, however Progenitors have now overtaken Xenos in popularity, and the number of players using “Other” fleets has almost doubled (very curious).

Which of these community tools are you interested in?

This was a new question on the poll, and it’s a very interesting result, because we didn’t expect the OPR Wiki to be such a popular choice amongst players. The current wiki is frankly sub-par, and we’re planning on staring a completely new wiki, on a better platform, and with much more content in the future.

Which OPR merch would you be interested in?

Another new question on the poll, and one that we were very curious about. We used to have a merch store a few years back, but decided to shut it down as it didn’t get a lot of traffic. Seeing that 60% of our audience might be interested in buying some merch is very cool, and as we produce more and more cool art, we think merch could be a great opportunity to spread some of the awesomeness around.

Do you have any suggestions for things we should do with OPR (new games, armies, features, etc.)?

Alright, this is the big one. As you can imagine, with over 400 messages, it’s impossible for us to cover everything, but here’s some of the most important takeaways for this survey.

  • Communication: There are still a ton of players that asked for content we already make, which means that our communication is still not that great. We are currently in the process of doing a big website update, which should go live in the next 9-18 months, and which should hopefully resolve a lot of these questions.
  • Example Army Lists: We got a ton of people asking for us to provide some examples of army lists for each army, so that they can get into the game quicker. This is going to be one of those things that will be included as part of our OPR Wiki re-building, giving players a single place to find pre-made army lists.
  • Player Finder: Many of you have asked for a player finder, which clearly shows us that nobody uses the forum, because we have a game finder board there. We’re currently thinking about how a finder system could be implemented, and it might come with the new website, but no promises.
  • Starter Sets: There were many requests for 3D print or physical starter sets, which is something that we’ve been thinking about for a while, and are looking for a good way to implement. Seeing so many people ask for it is definitely giving us motivation to push it further.
  • More Game Content: Lots of players asked for more campaigns, mission packs, and solo/coop games. We’re currently working on all of those, it’s just taking longer to develop than we expected. Once we’ve got the production pipeline well oiled, then we’ll be churning out lots of game content on the regular.
  • Volunteers Program: This was unexpected, but tons of you asked for some sort of volunteers program, in order to help spread the word about OPR games. We’ve never done something like this, but we’ll look into it, and see what sort of tools we can provide to help people run demos and recruit new players.
  • Organized Events Support: Tying into the previous point, there were many comments about providing support for organized events, be it tournaments or otherwise. This is definitely something that we want to support, and are working on some ways to provide event kits and prizes.

The first half of 2022 has been a wild ride for OPR, the project has been growing at an incredible pace, doubling in supporter numbers, which has been both great and problematic. As many of you know, I have been running this project by myself for the last 8 years, and it’s been kind of hard to manage this incredible growth all by myself.

In order to make sure that I can keep expanding OPR to achieve all of these things you’re hoping for, I’ve been growing the team by a lot over the last six months, which has temporarily slowed down the production of many things. That being said, having a bigger team, with members that can take care of different things independently, means that now we’re getting back into gear to fulfill all of our promises.

If everything goes well, there are a ton of things you can look forward to in 2022, such as new games, expansions, short stories, world guides, and of course lots of awesome miniatures. Thank you everyone for your continuous support, none of this would be possible without you, and we’re all working extremely hard to hopefully make you proud! :)

New Physical Minis Discount

As you know, we always try to provide more value for our supporters, and today is one of those days. :)

Over the last 6 months many Patrons kept asking us if it would be possible to have a discount for our physical models on Only-Games, and finally we have an answer!

Starting today all tiers will get a 5% discount code every month, which can be used unlimited times per month. If you’re already a Tier 1 patron, grab it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/60631647

Due to how print-on-demand production works, handing out discount codes is not as straight forward as with digital products, so this is a trial run for us. If this goes well, and the discount code doesn’t cause any issues, then we’ll keep the discount code around (plus maybe add a special 10% discount for stretch goal months).

Community Survey Results

Community Survey, Physical Minis, Video Content

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got a super interesting update, with the community survey results, some info on v2.50 progress, a price review for only-games, and finally a ton of new videos.

Let’s get to it!

Community Survey Results

Over the last week we ran our bi-annual community survey, and the results are in. With over 600 responses, and over 250 messages to read, this has been the biggest survey to date, with some very interesting results.

There’s lots of stuff to go through, so we’ll try to keep this as brief as possible.

Which of these game ideas are you most interested in?

For this survey, we wanted to focus on giving players a selection of games to pick from that actually reflect things we are interested in making, rather than the much more open surveys of the past.

Nonetheless, the results are pretty similar to our last few surveys, with Skirmish Adventure RPGs, Small-Scale Battles, and Mech Combat being the strongest genres. We added a few extra options for fleet-style games, and were surprised to see so many votes for Large-Scale Ship Battles, which is cool.

How would you like to learn about OPR lore?

Note: When we first launched the survey, we forgot to add the Narrative Campaigns option, and only noticed after ~50 people already too the survey. Seeing the amount of votes it got, we suspect that it would probably have gotten ~40 more votes in the end.

When it comes to learning about OPR lore, it seems that we are mostly doing things right, with people preferring the Army Book Intros and Narrative Campaigns to get their lore. It’s also interesting to see that people would like to read Short Stories without them being tied to gameplay as well, so that’s definitely something that we’re going to explore in the future.

Which of the OPR games do you play?

Note: The survey also included all of the one-off games individually, but since less than 5% of people play those, we decided to cut them from the graph.

The played games results are as expected, with most people playing Grimdark Future, and AoF: Regiments being the least played game. It’s nice to see that a good chunk of people are playing Warfleets: FTL, which gives us confidence to keep expanding on the game and genre.

Do you play using OPR miniatures?

This was a very surprising result for us. Until now, every survey we did over the years has been predominantly answered by people that use other miniatures, and seeing that almost 70% of players are using OPR minis of some form is a huge shift.

This result is actually a big revelation, because it completely changes our perspective on the votes for the next two questions, and also what type of messages we received at the end.

Which Grimdark Future armies do you play?

Because around 60% of players that answered the survey are using official OPR minis, this has completely shifted the results of this question. Where usually Battle Brothers and HDF are at the top, we now have lots of Alien Hives and Robot Legions players.

This is very cool to see, but it does make things a little skewed. Our suspicion is that as we release more official OPR armies, those armies will be at the top of the chart.

Which Age of Fantasy armies do you play?

Same as above, due to the official OPR minis the chart is heavily skewed towards Mummified Undead and Saurians, with Duchies of Vinci and Beastmen also lunging forward. Just for reference, our usual top charters in the last few surveys were Humans, Goblins, Orcs and Vampiric Undead.

Which Warfleets: FTL factions do you play?

We sort of just threw this one in there without any expectations, but the results are very interesting. Whilst overall it’s quite balanced, most people seem to be playing Empire, Xenos and Marauders. It’s also cool to see that about 15% of people are playing Other factions, which we assume means they’re using the fleet creation rules from the core rules to play custom fleets.

Do you have any suggestions for things we should do with OPR (new games, armies, features, etc.)?

This is the big one. With over 250 messages, it’s impossible to write everything here, so we will bullet point the most important takeaways. Don’t worry, we read all of your messages, so even if you don’t see your feedback mentioned here, we are keeping it in mind. :)

  • Communication: There are still many players that are asking for content we already makes, which makes us think that our communication is still not on point. We’re going to be doing a big website update in the next 1-2 years, and are hoping that it will help consolidate everything and make content easier to discover.
  • Solo/Coop: Many players are asking for solo/coop content, which is very fitting, as Sellswords/Mercs are games specifically designed to fill that niche. We know that it’s been taking a long time to develop them, but we want to get them absolutely right before release, so they’ll be out when they’re ready.
  • Campaign System: A lot of you have asked for more campaign systems. We have plans for a large-scale campaign system, with map control and resources, as well as a skirmish-scale campaign system for fantasy, similar to Gang Wars. No ETA on those, but they’re in the plans.
  • Unit Creator: It seems that many players are still not aware that we already have a custom unit creator, which you can get on Patreon. In the next few months we’re going to further expand it, allowing you to build entire armies and share them with the community with ease.
  • Specific Armies/Settings: There are many requests for armies to cover specific settings, historicals, etc. and this is all going to be solved once the expanded army creator is available. The army creator is going to revolutionize what kind of armies you can play, and open up a new world for OPR.
  • List Builder: It also seems that many players don’t know that we already have a List Builder for v2.50 that replaces BattleScribe, and which will be expanded to cover all games. Don’t worry though, all armies will continue to be available as downloadable PDFs as well.
  • More FTL Content: We were surprised to see a huge amount of messages asking for more FTL content, from expanding the available armies, to releasing new expansions, as well as making more 3D models. We have great plans for FTL in the future, so keep your eyes peeled!
  • Physical Rulebooks: This is something players have been asking for a while, and we are on it. The physical rulebooks were originally supposed to be released in September, but due to some important grammar reviews and game changes that are coming soon, they have been put on hold. We are hoping to be able to provide them by early 2022, so don’t give up yet.
  • Paper Minis: The paper minis topic is quite large, and could warrant its own post, but we hear your concerns about wanting more paper minis options. The reality is that only ~5% of our players actually use paper minis, so it’s hard to commit a lot of resources to something that is barely used. Despite this, our new packs have more minis, with more poses, more weapon options and more heads, and we will keep expanding them.
  • Thank You’s: Finally, a lot of you have used the feedback space to just say thank you or give us compliments, which we highly appreciate. It’s very heart warming to read your kind words, and makes all of this hard work worth it.

Thank you everyone for taking the survey and providing your feedback, we still have a long road ahead of us, and hope that you’ll keep coming along for the ride! :)

v2.50 Progress

We know that since the release of GF v2.50 there has seemingly been a bit of radio silence on army updates, and some people have asked us if we stopped making game updates, so we thought it would be good to explain exactly what is happening.

First of all, the army updates are not stopped, and we update v2.50 on a weekly basis.

The reason why there have been no updates here in the news posts, is because right now the army lists are still in beta, and with that there are lots of changes all the time. Sometimes we change the same thing in multiple ways during the same week, and it’s simply not feasible to log all the changes here.

We’re also currently putting the addition of new units on hold, at least until things are more stable. We know that some of you have minis that are currently not represented in the rules, and we will add them in the future.

So don’t worry, we are still working on the games. Once the lists are stable, and v2.50 comes out of beta, the changes will not be as frequent anymore, and with that we will go back to our regular news posts updates with changelogs.

In the meantime, you can check out the v2.50 beta here.

Only-Games Price Updates

About a year ago, we launched our Physical Minis Store to buy models from, to make our armies accessible to all of those that don’t have a 3D printer. After a year, it is time for us to update our prices, and we want to be fully transparent about what is happening and why.

When we set out to do this, we tried to compete with the prices of plastic miniatures, because those are what people are most familiar with. Over the past year however it has become clear that producing high quality resin minis at our current margins is simply not sustainable.

There are many instances where we are basically giving out the miniatures for free, or where we actually have losses. Add to that the amount of time and effort that goes into managing the store, marketing the minis, and handling customer service, and things get messy.

So, with that in mind, we are currently updating the prices on our Only-Games Store. We still want to keep our minis accessible, and are only updating the prices of minis where necessary.

Overall this means that there is a price increase of about $1-$2 per infantry mini, and a bit more for larger minis. In order to ensure that we can give you the lowest price possible for different minis, we are also doing away with our fixed prices per unit types, which actually means that some minis are getting cheaper.

In order to try to offset this price increase, we are currently discussing with our manufacturer how we could provide free shipping, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we know more.

3D Print, Community Survey, New Release, Video Content

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got some cool things for you, with our bi-annual Community Survey, a new FTL Quickstart set, a Free Mini, plus a bunch of new videos.

Let’s get to it!

Community Survey

Every 6 months we run a community survey to get a general feel for what sort of players are currently interested in OPR, and to give everyone an opportunity to send in their feedback/suggestions anonymously.

This is a super quick survey that only takes a few minutes to fill in, and we’ll be keeping it open for a week, with the results being revealed to the public in next week’s post.

Take the survey here: https://forms.gle/EDeazVbvM1zsaCwo8

New Warfleets: FTL Quickstart Set

Lately we’ve been getting lots of request for an FTL quickstart set, and who are we to deny it to our fans? Today we’re happy to announce that the FTL quickstart set is available for download!

The quickstarter set gives you everything you need to start playing exciting battles right away, without having to worry about painting miniatures or putting together your own fleet lists.

New Free Model on Cults 3D

Every now and then we add new free models to our Cults3D page, and this month we’ve added a Beastmen Warrior from the Beastmen army, bringing us up to 23 free models! :D

Community Survey Results + More

Community Survey, Game Update, Video Content

Hi everyone,

Last week we ran a community wide survey, asking you all for you input on the games, the armies, the project as a whole, and much more. We’re happy to say that we got a ton of responses, and they are super interesting. :D

Let’s get to it!

Community Survey Results

Alright everyone, it’s time to take a look at the community survey results. Since this time we had a couple more questions, I am going to give a quicker rundown of the results, just so this post doesn’t get too long.

Top 5 Voted:

  • Mech Combat
  • Customizable Skirmish
  • Small-Scale Sci-Fi
  • Cyberpunk
  • Post-Apocalyptic

The trend seems to be pretty in line with our last survey results, but I do find it interesting that there are so many votes for customizable skirmish. I am wondering if maybe the way that the idea is titled might be giving different people different ideas of what that means, so if those that voted could leave a comment with what they expect, it would be really helpful.

This one is also very aligned with the usual trends, with Battle Brothers, Alien Hives, Robot Legions and HDF at the top, closely followed by Orc Marauders, Havoc Brothers and TAO.

Fantasy remains stable, with a much more even spread of factions played across the board. It’s sad to see that Volcanic Dwarves actually lost players, going from 4.8% on the last survey down to 1%.

The graph is a little deceiving because it has two purple sections with almost the same color, but the 24.8% one is actually “I would like to play OPR games, but still haven’t had the chance”. It’s nice to see that even with the pandemic, people are able to get in at least a couple of games a month.

As expected, the majority of people play at home, whilst the rest is evenly split between online matches and store/club games. It’s interesting to see that the percentage of online games is much much smaller than the in person games, because when looking around on discord people mostly talk about their online matches, so it sometimes give me the impression that not many people are getting to play at home.

This one was also quite expected, with most people playing pick-up matches and narrative/campaign games, and almost nobody playing tournament games. It would be fun to get some sort of tournament organized as the games get more balanced, maybe it could be done online or at some point once restrictions are lifted.

I’m not sure what to think of this one, because I suppose that most people that play competitively are also looking to play with balanced armies, so maybe the way that the question was phrased was not right. In any case, it’s interesting to see that there are 17.9% of you that ignore points balance, wasn’t expecting that.

Another one that was quite expected, but still interesting to see. Most people play with physical models from other companies, and only a small percentage play with paper minis. The spread of 3D models is pretty even, which I would assume is because 3D printing players often mix and match between minis from different creators.

Last but not least, the open feedback box. As always, everyone has been super sweet and shown their love for the projeect, and I really really appreciate it. At the end of the day, I do this for you peeps, so it’s awesome to see people happy! :D

Now, let me go over some of the most frequently mentioned feedback:

  • Army Roster App – There is currently work being done on a webapp that is going to allow you to easily put together your lists to play, as well as allow you to create your own army lists (using the point calculator) and easily share them with the community. No idea when it will be done, but stay tuned.
  • Dungeon Crawler – Lots of you asked about the making of a solo/coop dungeon crawl game, and we’re actually working on that right now, with a game called Sellswords. The game is still in early access on Patreon, and we’re hoping to get that done and released to the public soon!
  • Small-Scale Games/Models – As per the games results above, we know that lots of players enjoy small-scale games, and we haven’t been idle about that. We are working on a new line of small-scale models as we speak, and once we’ve released Sellswords, we will focus on a small-scale game as well.
  • More Original Armies – Many of you asked if we could make more original armies, and we’re happy to say that we do plan on releasing more new armies soon. We’d like to first complete the armies we already started, but then we want to alternate between a classic army and an original army. We’re also going to put more effort into making sure that even our classic armies have a much more unique feel, so that they truly belong to OPR.
  • Printable Terrain – We’re currently in the early stages of producing our first 3D printable terrain sets, but if you’re into papercraft, then you can already get paper terrain sets by OPR on Patreon and WGV/DTRPG. We currently have a grimdark set ready, and are working on the release of a fantasy set as well.

That’s it for now, there was lots of other feedback, but with 100+ messages I won’t be able to list them all here. Nonetheless, I’ve read every single one of them, and I am happy to say that many of your wishes will come true in the future, keep your eyes peeled. :)

New Loyalty Reward Units

Last month we revealed our new loyalty rewards, and now we finally have rules for them!

Check out the Alien Hives for the Hive Titan rules, and the Duchies of Vinci for the Walking Fortress rules. These two massive behemoths are truly a sight to behold, as are true forces of destruction on the tabletop. :D

FTL on Patreon Again

Warfleets: FTL was originally developed on Patreon under the early access label, meaning that once the game has been completed, it would be removed and only be available for sale on our WGV/DTRPG stores.

Well, after many many fan requests, we have decided to bring Warfleets: FTL back on Patreon, making it a permanent reward like our other Full Rulebooks. We think that it’s worth it to give new players a chance to discover the game like that, and we also having something new cooking to be revealed later…

Arena Games Moved

As announced last week, the OPR Arena games are now officially on hiatus, and we have removed them from the main games page, as well as from our WGV/DTRPG stores.

Don’t worry though, if you’re into arena, you can still find it in the One-Off Games.

Community Survey, Arena Hiatus, v2.50 Explained

Community Survey, General Update, Video Content

Hi everyone,

This week we’ve got tons of stuff for you, with a new Community Survey for you, some updates on our Arena Games, as well as a long-form explanation for the v2.50 changes.

Let’s get to it!

Community Survey

Every 6 months we run a community survey to get a general feel for what sort of players are currently interested in OPR, and to give everyone an opportunity to send in their feedback/suggestions anonymously.

This is a super quick 3-question survey that only takes a few minutes to fill in, and we’ll be keeping it open for a week, with the results being revealed to the public in next week’s post.

Take the survey here: https://forms.gle/k1zGPsmdhR5RzvhG8

Arena Games Hiatus

This month we’ve released our last arena warband on Patreon, and we have some news.

With this warband, we have now completed the 3rd seasons of our arena games, and as previously discussed we have decided to take a break from the games indefinitely, instead of launching into 4th season in July.

It was really fun to work on these games for the past 9 months, but unfortunately they haven’t been able to really find an audience, and in their current format we don’t think that they fit into the OPR ecosystem like our other games.

Because of this 3rd season won’t be available for sale on WGV, and we’ll be removing seasons 1+2 from WGV as well, to make sure that people don’t buy into a game that they expect new seasons for. Don’t worry though, all of the rules and warbands will continue to be available on our website, so that you can still share the games with friends.

If you’re interested in continuing to develop new warbands for arena, we recommend supporting us on Patreon, where the warband creator will be available until the end of June.

We’re going to keep thinking about how we can re-work the arena games to turn them into something that can be enjoyed by a bigger part of our community, so fingers crossed that one day we’ll have more news for you arena fans. :)

Balance v2.50 Explained

Last week we revealed that we’ve been working on new versions of our army lists, which are meant to re-balance the game and improve the gameplay on multiple fronts (see here).

We’ve already received a lot of feedback from the community, which has been great, but there have also been a lot of players that are curious about the reasoning behind the various changes, and how they’re meant to improve the games.

In order to avoid making this update extremely long, we’ve created a PDF with a compilation of all the major changes and the reasoning behind them, which should hopefully give you a better idea of where we’re coming from.

Check it out here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GBXf_2PNmvORxUVl41OCC1CQU-UBzrpM/view?usp=sharing

Please note that all of these changes are not final yet, so you can expect the lists to be wildly different by the time that we are ready to fully release them to the public.

Darkness Within, Survey Results, Gangs Updates

2D Print, 3D Print, Collaboration, Community Survey, Painting Contest

Hi everyone,

Today we’ve got a bunch of cool stuff for you, with a teaser for Darkness Whitin, results for last week’s Community Survey, a ton of new Gang Units, plus some news for 3D Printing as well as a brand new 2D Print Collaboration.

Let’s get to it!

Darkness Within

December saw the completion of the Jakob’s Path narrative campaign for Grimdark Future, so starting in January we’ve got a brand new Age of Fantasy narrative campaign coming at you called Darkness Within.

Find out more by clicking here…

Community Survey Results

Every 6 months we’re happy to make a community survey, where players get the chance to tell us what they want to see in the future, share which armies they play, and provide any feedback they have.

Usually we also have some extra questions about other stuff, but this time we decided to keep the survey lean and simple, focusing on the things that matter to us the most.

Let’s see what results we got. :D

Which of these settings would you be interested in for new full games?

Alright, this is the big one, as it guides the development of our next games, and it seems that we got pretty much the same results as in our last survey, except that this time “Customizable Skirmish” has also shot it’s way to the top, and we’ve got a lot of votes for a One-Page RPG as well, which is not the norm.

Here’s the top 5 highlighted:

  • Small-Scale Sci-Fi – 37.5%
  • Mech Combat – 35.6%
  • Customizable Skirmish – 32.9%
  • Cyberpunk – 28.8%
  • One-Page RPG – 21.9%

Let’s break down what we’ve been planning for the future, since it’s going to be pretty much in line with the survey results:

  • Very soon we’ll have a One-Page RPG system coming as a one-off game, to test the waters and see how people like our approach to the genre. If we see that it gets a good response, then we might expand that into a full game in the future.
  • Then we’ve got a new Skirmish Adventure Game that we’ve been trying to develop over the past couple of months, which will also scratch a bit of that RPG itch, but most importantly it will be in line with the results from the last survey.
  • For Mech Combat, right now we’re working on revising the FTL rules, and once that is done and we’ve got the full game released, we’ll be working on a Mech Combat game that uses a modified version of the same engine.
  • For Small-Scale Sci-Fi, that’s something that we’ve been thinking about for a very long time, and we’re probably going to build a system that uses a similar model as FTL, where you have a core set of units types and customization options, plus 5-6 factions that can be further customized (instead of 20+ army books).
  • For Cyberpunk, we’ve currently got the Double Tap rules as a one-off, and would be very happy to expand those into a full game, so that’s definitely coming some day. Honestly with the development speed we have we’re not sure if it’ll be possible in 2021, but we’ll try.
  • Finally, for Customizable Skirmish, we’ve had some ideas on how we could expand on WarStuff to make it a little more fun and customizable, whilst also adding some new ways to play, and we’re planning on working on that as a side-project since it doesn’t take up as much time as developing other games.

That’s it on the games side, now onto the next two questions:

Which Grimdark Future armies do you play?

On the Grimdark Future side things are pretty stable as usual, with lots of Battle Brothers players dominating the landscape. It’s really cool to see that we’ve got some people that are playing the armies we’ve done in collaboration with TMC and TEO, and we’re hoping to do more in the future!

Which Age of Fantasy armies do you play?

With Age of Fantasy we also have more or less similar results as in the last survey, with a much more balanced distribution of armies played. It’s also cool to see that some people are playing the just recently released Giant Tribes, which are definitely a niche army.

Do you have any suggestions for things we should do with OPR (new games, armies, features, etc.)?

Finally, the open question is always a delight, since we get such a diverse range of feedback, questions, suggestions, and more. There’s also always a bunch of you who use this opportunity to thank us for making the games, which is very heart warming, and actually I have to thank you for making this possible. This project truly couldn’t exist without it’s fans, and I’m happy that we have such a nice community! :D

Now onto some of the feedback, I’ll try to keep it brief:

  • Some people have asked us if your focus will shift from games to miniatures, and the answer is a very decisive no. The miniatures are a great way for us to further establish our own settings, to provide fans with something cool, and to provide funding for the project, but that’s it. Whilst we definitely want to keep expanding and improving our miniatures, we have no intention to stop focusing on the games. We provide regular updates to all of our games, and currently have 3 games in early access, with more coming in the future, so we’ve actually ramped up our game development as well. So don’t worry about the games, lots of stuff is coming your way!
  • Lots of people commented that they’d like to see more stuff like Gang Wars but for the other games, like a Mordheim-style game, or Crusade-style rules. That’s definitely something that we’re planning on doing, so it’s just a matter of time before it’s released.
  • There’s also lots of people that have suggested we do map-based campaigns, and that’s also something that we’ve already been planning on doing, so it’s just a matter of time before we get to it.
  • Some people have asked us to provide solo-rules for our games, but actually we already have solo-rules for all of our 5 mainline games. This probably means that the information is not displayed well on the website, and we’ll have to take a look at how to make things more visible.
  • In addition to that, a lot of people have asked for a solo/coop skirmish dungeon exploration game, and as we mentioned above, we’ve got a Skirmish Adventure Game in the works which is exactly that.
  • There were some people who asked if it’s possible to play our games online, and it definitely is! We have an active community of players that use Roll20 and TTS, so make sure to join our Discord server to set up games.
  • Some people asked if we have plans to release 100% original OPR armies for 3D printing, and that’s also something we’ve been planning on doing. Right now we’re going to be doing 2 regular army releases followed by 1 original army release, so you can look forward to that.
  • Finally, a lot of people have said that they enjoy the little snippets of lore we provide, and that they’d like to see more. Well, fret not, as we’ve got a whole series of campaigns coming out which take place in our game universes, so there’s lots of lore coming you way.

I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the survey once more, and we’ll be back with another community survey in about 6 months when we can catch up again! :D

New Gang Units

With Gang Wars being currently available on Patreon, we’ve decided to go back and re-visit the Gangs of Hive City army list, adding 20 new units for the existing gangs, as well as adding a completely new mercenaries gang, which features units that can be taken by any gang to bolster their abilities.

  • The Cult – Mutant Shamblers, Bomb Rats

Collaboration with Chimeric Creations

Chimeric Creations was actually started by one of our community members Murmillo, who has been working toward creating fantasy miniatures that can be used to play miniature wargames and RPG’s. This set actually works perfectly to play a Dark Elf warband in AoF: Skirmish, or even build a small Dark Elf army for AoF!
