Community Survey Results
It's the end of the year! And so it's time to take a peek at the results of the bi-annual community survey we posted last week. Thank you to everyone who responded! Let's take a peek at what you've said.
Which OPR games do you play?

Grimdark Future is our most played game! With nearly 75% of our players playing, with Age of Fantasy played by over half of you. Our skirmish games, GF: Firefight and AoF: Skirmish stay close to their battle game counterparts with 52% and 38%, respectively, and our other games hover between 13% and 19% of players. This means that a good deal of you are playing multiple OPR games! And our favorite stat here is that only 5.7% of respondants said they don't play OPR games, down from 8.9% last survey.
How often do you play OPR games?

Compared to our previous survey, not only are you all playing more OPR games, you're also playing more often! With most of you playing at least one game a month. We love to see this and hope you all keep getting matches together, rolling dice, and having fun!
Where do you play OPR games?

Most of you are still playing home games, and we're seeing a small increase in in store play. We hope to see this number rise as we make Grimdark Future available to retailers thanks to the recently successful Grimdark Future: Broken Truth campaign over on Gamefound.
What OPR community events would you be interested in attending?

But when it comes to what events you'd be interested in playing? There have only been a few changes. Casual events continue to be the lead by far with a smaller but dedicated fanbase for competitive events and tournaments. We're going to continue to offer continued support for both audiences through the OPR Rangers Program as well as our expanded Convention appearances and event schedules.
What aspects of the recently released v3.5 of our games do you like most?

We introduced several changes with the recent release of v3.5 of our games. But what about the release did you all like the most? It seems that the Army-Wide rules for each army was the most popular. This isn't a big surprised because of how frequently it was requested in previous surveys, but we're glad to see it so well recieved! The New specialities were also popular as well as the Re-Worked Hero Auras.
What is important to you when choosing a model for your games?

As we keep releasing more models we're always interested in the kinds of models you all want most. The answer to this question, though, couldn't be more clear with over 90% of you saying that the design and theme of the model itself is what is important when you're choosing a model, above other considerations like ease of paint or even how well it represents the unit on the table.
When it comes to a models design or theme of a model range:

So what about that style? It seems that having some original elements is important, either in addition to the existing themes and tropes, or entirely original themes and tropes for the range. Only 12% prefering models with few or no original elements.
What makes a model easy to paint for you?

We design our models with painting in mind, so we're interested to see what you all think makes a model easier to paint. Clearly defined areas that aren't overly detailed as well as textured areas that will work well with the newer contrast-style paints were the top performers here. Between this and earlier answer, its clear you don't want overly detailed models.
When it comes to how a model represents its game stats / unit profile, what is important to you:

For those with a preference, you want the models to closely match the game stats but that smaller options and details aren't important there. We're glad to hear this, as we've been trying our best to not only flesh out each new release, but we've also gone back to update older rangers to add missing options to their kits, like the recent free update to the Robot Legions models.
When it comes to model detail, what is most important to you:

On a scale of 1-5 how detailed do you want your models? 3 was the answer, which I guess isn't surprising. Enough detail to enjoy the model and for it to represent itself well on the table, but not so much it become burdomsome.
What model scale do you prefer?

For model scale, there was one clear answer: You want Heroic Scale models as opposed to more realistic scale. Easier to paint, easier to read on the table top, so we understand that choice. Most also prefered the larger 32mm scale instead of the smaller 28mm, nearly at a 2:1 margin.
How do you like to decorate base your model bases?

When it comes to basing, though, there isn't a clear answer here, you all like variety! Simple bases and ones with bits and decorative elements were the larger answer, but everything except leaving them unpainted and blank seemed popular.
For Fantasy Models: Square Bases or Round Bases?

But what shape should those bases be? Especially for Fantasy models, where games like Age of Fantasy: Regiments benefits from rectangular bases. But even here, where you all choose to use round bases for your models, or using movement trays to adapt when needed. Only 15% using square bases for their models.
Which OPR Comics do You Read?

With a new season of OPR Comics releasing, we're curious which of the comics you're reading! And here, Sirius Business seems the most popular choice, which make sense due to Grimdark Future being our most popular game. But all of the comics seem to be withing striking distance.
Where do you primarily read the comics?

Most of you are also reading the comics on our website! For our social media, the original home of the comics, Instagram, leads the pack, but as we spread the comics to other networks, we're seeing more of you read them there, as well.
What do you enjoy about the comics?

You also seem to enjoy both the jokes and humor of the comics as well as the lore of our games and worlds that we've slipped into them. We're glad that they're a fun way to learn about OPR's faction and lore, and hope you keep enjoying them as we release more!
Would you be interested in a printed collection of OPR Comics?

But what about collecting them? As we dip our toe into physical production, what about printed comics? Of those interested it seems larger bound collections were more popular than issues or smaller releases.
Do you play Table Top RPGs such as D&D, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Etc?

A lot of minis are used in more than one type of game, so we're curious about how many of you also enjoy RPGs? And the answer was... most of you! 75% of you already play Table Top RPGs, and only 11% of our audience has no interest at all. This was, frankly, a higher percentage than we expected, but our audience continues to show that you all like games of all types instead of just a single game.
Which Table Top RPGs do you play, if any?

But what games specifically? D&D holds the top slot, with 74.4%, and while that isn't a surprise that its in the lead, nearly half of you play other games as well. Pathfinder has a strong showing, as does the ever-popular and creepy Call of Cthulhu. But there is a wide spread over all.
If you play Dungeons & Dragons, what level ranges do you play?

Getting more specific, we used D&D to see about what power level of game and story you all enjoy. Mid level was king, but High Level play seems less popular. This tracks with the industry as a whole, with most games enjoyed when Fireballs start flying around.
If we were to make RPG material, what RPG Material would you like from OPR?

For RPG Material from OPR, there was a wide spread as well, almost dead even between stats, player rules, and adventures. And only 25% of you were uninterested in RPG material from us entirely, which matches perfectly with the previous answers.
When you're building your armies, do you use your own custom names and lore?

You all are still customizing your armies! Most with custom names for their armies and heroes, but over 40% of you have given your armies fully custom backgrounds and lore! Freedom and customization have always been important for OPR and so it isn't too surprising to see the community embrace it so enthusiastically.
How do you paint your models?

And what custom army would be complete without a custom paint scheme? Nearly 90% of you paint with your own schemes in mind, instead of following official art or pre-fab options. Keep painting and keep showing us the results, we love to seem them!
How do you customize the models you use in your armies?

In fact the customization seems to be on the rise, with even more of you kit bashing the models or even sculpting original elements than the last survey. This hobby really supports the creative side, and we're glad to see it embraced by the community.
Have you ever used Army Forge Studio to create custom units, army books, or factions?

With Army Forge Studio, OPR lets you completely customize or even build up entire factions and armies for our games. Nearly half of our audience uses it, though its a pretty even spread on exactly how they use it. Remember that you can share these creations inside Army Forge, and you can see the custom armies other players have shared for free.
What minis do you use to play OPR games?

When its time to pick models to play with, most of you are 3d printing the official models, or 3d printing other model ranges. Of course a lot of you are using models from a certain very popular brand, and frequently both 3d printing AND using the other models. We wonder how this will shift once you're able to buy official OPR models in your local game stores?
Do you use any of the Advanced Rulebooks for our games?

What about playing the game beyond the one page Core Rules? Turns out nearly 2/3rds of you use the Advanced Rulebooks when you play, and most of you at least own them. So not only to you enjoy customizing your models, but you also enjoy customizing your gameplay, as well.
Which Advanced Rules do you use in your games?

But what rule from those books are the most popular? The missions and deployment styles take the top slot, a great way to add a ton of variety to your games easily. And over 40% of you are using the Advanced Actions to add even more strategic depth to your matches. The advanced Terrain rules are also very popular, again adding more variety to the table itself. But from there things get spread out, which we think means that players are customizing the game experience to tailor fit their prefered play style.
Have you played a continuing campaign in any of our games?

This year we've released even more support for campaign play, and that segment seems to be growing compared to our last survey with over 25% of you playing in ongoing campaign games this year.
If you have played a campaign in any of our games, how many players were involved?

But there seems to be a huge variety when it comes tot he number of players, but the majroity seem to be 5 or less involved instead of large campaigns with dozens of people participating.
Do you make your own campaigns or use a pre-made campaign or mission pack?

Most of you are playing with your own campaigns and stories, still, but we've seen a small bump to the number of you playing using our official campaigns and mission packs. Either way, we're looking forward to seeing the stories and scenarios you enjoy.
Which of our recent Narrative Campaigns or Mission Packs interest you most?

With our Narrative Campaigns and Mission Packs, there is a pretty even spread of interest, but The Voidsun Threat, Edge of the Radiance, and Secrets of Tixal seem to be our most popular, which matches with the popularity of their games, but here the Quest and Star Quest campaigns are over-representing compared their player numbers, hinting that our solo / co-op players especially enjoy having pre-made campaigns ready to go.
What is important to you in a Narrative Campaign or Mission Pack?

For the campaigns themselves, the game play, missions, and meta progression are the most important to the community, though a Strong Story is important to over half of you.
Which Age of Fantasy armies do you play?

For Age of Fantasy's faction popularity, The Vampiric Undead takes a strong and clear lead in popularity, with the Saurians right on their heals with the Ratmen. The Dwarves, already a popular faction, have become even more popular with the release of their model line on Patreon, but every faction seems to have some fans, at least, with many factions in the 15-20% range.
Which Age of Fantasy: Quest Classes do you play?

For Age of Fantasy: Quest, though, we see a shift towards Fighters and a few less bards. But otherwise this hasn't changed much since last time or the first time, meaning the popularity of classes seem pretty static for Quest.
Which Grimdark Future armies do you play?

The Human Defense Force maintain their spot as the most popular Grimdark Future army. Robot Legions also saw a jump this period as well, catching up to the Alien Hives. Battle Brothers have even gained in popularity this period. But the largest jump belongs to the Goblin Reclaimers, going from 7% to over 20% after the release of their model range!
Which Grimdark Future: Star Quest Classes do you play?

For GF: Star Quest, there has been a lot of shuffling of the numbers, with he psychic gaining ground, as well as the Berserker, but the Soldier only furthered its lead as head of the pack with 46% of the players.
Which Grimdark Future: Warfleets factions do you play?

For Grimdark Future: Warfleets, the Alien Hives have surged forward to tie the Battle Brothers, exactly! Still the HDF keep in the top slot, but over all these numbers match nearly 1:1 with the comparative popularity of their Grimdark Future counterparts.
Thank you, everyone, for answering the community survey, we always look forward to your feedback. It is great to see the responses from so many members of our community!
