Community Survey Results

July 20, 2023

Last week we ran our bi-annual community survey, and the results are in! With over 1,200 responses we are very happy that so many of you participated. Thank you!

We have a lot of questions to go through, so we're going to keep this as brief as we can.

Which of these game ideas are you most interested in?

Again the results are very similar to our previous survey with high interest in the coop skirmish games and small scale games. The mech warfare game is again the other stand outranking. These projects continue to be in progress, with Age of Fantasy: Quest available as one of the beta games available to Patrons.

Which of the OPR Games do you play?

Again we have near identical results to our previous survey. Age of Fantasy: Skirmish seems to have closed the gap between it and Age of Fantasy, with both having very close numbers now, and Grimdark Future continues to be our most popular game.

How often do you play OPR games?

These are pretty typical results for hobby war games, with many of your playing the game one or more times per week. We are also encouraged that more 97 percent of you either play our games or are interested in doing so.

Where do you play OPR games?

Here we see that the grand majority of our players play at home! This is typical of most war and hobby games, so it isn't a surprise. We do hope that more options open and grow in popularity as we work on our organized play program.

How would you like to learn about OPR lore?

When it comes to lore, the answers are the same as our last poll, which is good as we've already new and updated lore information for our armies inside the Army Book listings. We have been spotlighting these lore updates the last several weeks here on our website, and we encourage everyone to check them out the Fantasy Lore and Grimdark Lore updates. We will have even more to share, soon.

Do you play using OPR miniatures?

The number of players using OPR miniatures grew slightly last time, which is encouraging, and the number of players not using OPR miniatures in their games has shrunk to 21.3%. We expect more and more people to use OPR miniatures in their games as the releases continue.

Are you interested in buying physical minis from OPR?

While less than 2% of you use physically purchased miniatures, as opposed to miniatures you 3D print yourselves, nearly 30% of you would be interested in purchasing physical OPR miniatures in one way or another. Right now physical miniatures can be purchased on our Only-Games store.

Are you interested in buying narrative campaign bundles (rules + characters/heroes + armies)?

Over 70% of you would be interested in getting narrative campaign bundles, a combination of rules, characters/heroes, and armies packaged together. Though where and how you'd prefer to get them is split, with a digital purchase from an online store being the most popular choice. Such a positive response to this idea is encouraging.

Where do you follow OPR news & content?

As the community grows, knowing where and how to reach all of you is important. And it is no surprise that our three most active tools are the most popular, with Discord coming out on top. We're glad the new website is going over as well as it has, as well. We'll continue to explore the best channels to reach you and spread the word about OPR.

Which Grimdark Future armies do you play?

While overall very similar to our results last time with one change that stands out. The first is that the Alien Hives have jumped to the lead, overtaking both the Robot Legions and Battle Brothers. This is likely due in part to the model refresh that the Alien Hives have received the last few months. Similarly, the Blessed Sisters have seen an increase. We expect to continue to see armies with official OPR models to grow in popularity.

Which Age of Fantasy armies do you play?

The Ratmen and the Human Empire have seen nearly 10% growth compared to our last survey as well. This seems to be consistent with the results we were seeing with the Grimdark Future armies, where both of those factions are our most recent model range releases.

Which Warfleets: FTL factions do you play?

With the Warfleets: FTL factions, however, we've seen quite a large shift. While the most popular fleets are still the same, overall the numbers have evened out. There is only a 12% difference between the Empire in first place, and the Marauders in last. And 'Other' has jumped up to 31 percent.

Which Grimdark Future: FTL factions do you play?

Now that Grimdark Future: FTL is available as early access on Patreon, we wanted to see which factions were popular there. These numbers seem to match near exactly to the faction popularity in Grimdark Future above, though 'Other' was a surprise to see at nearly 28% of the results and represents the 2nd most popular option.

Do you have any suggestions for things we should do with OPR (new games, armies, features, etc.)?

We got a lot of feedback to this question. With 790 responses, we can't answer each one individually, but we will go over some of the important takeaways and highlights.

Make models for [X] faction. / Please release [X] army.

By far the most common suggestion was to release official OPR models for one faction or another. We hope to eventually release models for every faction in our games. So please pay attention to our Patreon posts for upcoming previews.

Small Scale Games

This has been a strong request for awhile now, and it is a project in the works. We hope to get back to this project as soon as we can once we've completed some of our other projects.

Solo / Coop Rules

There have been a lot of requests for Solo and Coop rules for our games, both for our existing games and the new adventure game Age of Fantasy: Quest, which is available now in Beta on Patreon. In addition with the release of the upcoming 3.0 rules, the AI rules for our games have been revisited and are now called Solo & Coop Rules.

Expanded Lore / More Lore / Named Characters

This was another of the most common requests and suggestions in the survey. We've already begun to revisit and expand the lore, as we've said above, and we have even more lore and story content in the works that you'll be able to see very soon.

Balance Changes / Bring More Content from the Competitive Rules into the Core Rules / Work on 3.0

Many of you want us to bring some of the rules explanation and balance changes from the competitive rules into the core rules when we release 3.0. This is already in the works and we will be previewing some of these changes in the coming weeks leading up to the 3.0 rules release. Making the games as easy to learn and play as we can is one of our highest priorities.

Physical Boxed Sets / OPR Games Available in Local Game Stores

A lot of you would love to be able to buy our games in your local game stores. It is certainly something we are interested in exploring but we don't have anything to say about it at this time.

Organized Play / Volunteer Program

There are many of you that have asked for more organized play support, local store support, as well as for a volunteering program. This is something that we’re slowly working on, and we want to help you create your own local communities for OPR, with lots of tools and resources to get you going. Stay tuned for more information in the coming year.

Thank You / Keep Doing Great Work

Finally, there were a huge number of you who thanked us and urged us to continue to keep doing what we are doing. We really appreciate all the support and love you've been sending our way. We look forward to providing you with fun games, awesome models, and new worlds to explore for years to come.

Thank you everyone for answering the community survey, it’s always a pleasure to hear all of your feedback. It is heartening to see the number of responses to the survey grow every time as our community continues to grow as well.

Happy Wargaming!
