Generic Naming Now Available in Army Forge

Hello everyone,

Tano here, the creator of OPR.

I wanted to personally write this post, because this topic is very close to my heart, and I want to make sure to explain things in a way that can avoid any misunderstandings. :)

When I started OPR almost 12 years ago (time really flies), the goal was simple: make a free one-page wargame that can be played with any miniatures you have. This goal is still at the heart of what OPR does today, but a lot of new things have been added around the core games to provide more awesome content to our players. Over the years we have added new expansions, started making minis, and started releasing our own lore, which has made a lot of players happy.

But this has also brought us to a weird situation where we've felt a bit torn about some of the decisions we have to make, specifically when it comes to the naming of things in the game, such as factions and units. On the one hand, we want to build our own worlds with our own names for factions and units, but on the other hand we want to make sure that the games keep being easily playable with whatever minis you have if you don't care for that.

This has meant that so far, we've had to find a middle-ground which didn't really make anyone happy. For players that want to be immersed in OPR lore the names are too generic and boring, whilst for players that want to play with other minis any name change we make just makes things more confusing.

So, with that in mind, we've devised a simple solution: Generic Naming!

Generic Naming

Generic Naming is a simple option that you can now select in the game settings menu in Army Forge, which will change the names of all factions and units to a static generic version. These names are meant to be simple and to the point, without any fluff around them, exactly what you need to get playing with whatever minis you have. The plan is that after a short adjustment period where we might modify a few of them, these names are also meant to be static, so that you don't have to worry about learning new names ever again.

This mode essentially serves as a guarantee that no matter what crazy things we're up to with OPR lore, you'll always be able to keep playing our games with your minis as you know and love them.

That also means that having generic mode frees us up to start using more interesting faction and unit names following OPR lore, and in the long run you can expect us to spruce things up a little here and there. This is also important to keep OPR legally protected, which is to the benefit of all our players. Don't worry though, we have no plans to start using weird proprietary names for things, so an Elf will keep being an Elf, a Dwarf will keep being a Dwarf, etc.

That's about it. :)

Our Core Values

Before I go, I would like to stress one point: no matter what the future holds, we are still sticking to our core values, and we have no intention of changing that. The games are always going to remain free, and they're always going to be designed to be played with any miniatures you have first. Updates like these are meant to further cement this philosophy, and we will keep doing everything we can to be as player-friendly as possible. We don't intend to force anything on you, be in our lore or our minis, and that is not going to change.

I hope that you've enjoyed these last 12 years of OPR as much as I have, and I'm looking forward to enjoying this ride with you for many years to come!

Happy Wargaming!
