The Whispers Below: Meet Tayra and Oath-U7X1
Launching next month on MyMiniFactory's Frontiers, The Whispers Below is an all new Narrative Campaign for Grimdark Future, that sees the scrappy Jackals exploring and looting in places that maybe they shouldn't be while the Robot Legion wake up from slumber after crashing. It allows you to play out the story of these two faction's interactions by playing through 10 brand new missions. It also comes with four new Narrative Heroes. The two we'll be meeting this week are Tayra, a Jackals Shaman, and Oath-U7X1, A Robot Legions Annihilator in charge of security. Tayra, "Shipspeaker"
“I’ve heard the song of this ship, but you must take care. It’s not an empty metal husk, but a creature calling out for us to hear what it has to say…”
A young Shaman with keen psychic abilities, Tayra should be a rising star within her tribe. Instead she finds herself with the outcasts and exiles, getting by day to day on scraps.
After a tragic accident, Tayra was narrowly saved through fusing salvaged Robot Legion technology to her skull. Since then, she has claimed to hear whispers from the ship that her people have been gradually salvaging for the last five years. Most of Tayra’s tribe have written off her tales of the crashed vessel speaking to her as lubricating fluids seeping into her head; but a handful of outcasts and misfits have rallied around her, hoping that she may have been touched by the spirits that can lead them to fame and fortune.
The voices call her deeper and with the aid of a questionably loyal crew, Tayra believes she finally has what it takes to delve in. With her trusty Droideridoo and her close companion Ranjo, she will plumb the depths of the crashed Robot Legion vessel, only to discover that it is not as empty as she once believed.
As tensions rise, Tayra must decide how far she will go to follow her own intuition and whether she can truly trust the voices below, as well as whether she can keep her ragtag band from splitting when the going gets tough.
How far will Tayra follow the call?
As a Shaman Tayra starts off with Caster 1 which gives her some flexibility with how she can help, hinder or attack. While not particularly threatening up close, with her Droideridoo she can get consistent ranged attacks that will benefit from the Jackals Scrapper ability, making enemy 6's when saving not as safe as they thought it might have been. If ever enemies do start getting a little too close that's when she can use the whispers to her advantage and force an enemy unit to move up to 6". Through this form of Mind Control, she can push threats away, or make sure there's always something close for her band of Jackals to take apart.
Oath-U7X1, Head of Security
“Irrelevant, Xyros-Z320. These are intruders. Our orders are to eliminate them immediately.”
Oath-U7X1 was assigned head of security for a Robot Legions research ship along the edge of the Radiance Contamination Zone. He prides himself on his unwavering devotion to his duty, carrying out regulations to the letter in order to ensure the mission’s success.
Even after a disaster saw his entire vessel crashland on Ijida, with atmospheric interference forcing much of the crew into dormancy, Oath’s sense of duty remains. While some in his crew may seek to reassess the situation after being reawakened by the presence of opportunistic scavengers, Oath is determined to preserve the findings of the research ship regardless of the cost. First and foremost, that means dealing with the Jackals trying to steal from his ship.
Oath makes for a formidable opponent, determined to weather enemy attacks until he can personally bring them down with his fearsome enforcement blades. The relatively lightly armoured Jackals will have to fight smart and keep him at range if they don’t want to be the ones left on the floor of the old wreck.
While initially Oath’s single-mindedness appears to be merely his own obsession, it is possible this sense of urgency came from higher up; the discoveries made within the Radiance cannot be compromised at any cost.
Oath-U7X1's Primary functions are security and enforcement which is why his stats of QUA 3+ and DEF 3+ make him good at both. When it comes to enforcement, his Enforcement Blades do most of the work with 4 attacks at AP 1 which is usually a decent number of attacks all on it's own, but paired with Surge it turns any 6's into even more hits. For Security there's his Protection Feat Aura. It's only once per game, but when he decides to use it him and his unit get an extra roll to prevent wounds on a 4+ which is on top of their Self-Repair. It'll go a long way to saving himself and his security personnel from becoming dormant again before they deal with any intruders.
